There are objects in this world that carry the weight of unimaginable time. The name means ‘seawater’ in Latin — an apt description of that particular blue-green, the color of a shallow tropical ocean in morning light. Pakistani aquamarine from the Karakoram region grows in phenomenal prisms, sometimes measuring thirty centimeters. The color comes from ferrous iron.
This specimen originates from Shigar Valley, Pakistan, one of the world’s most significant localities for this type of material. Collectors and scientists have drawn from this region for generations, and for good reason: the combination of geological conditions here produces specimens of exceptional quality and clarity.
