There are objects in this world that carry the weight of unimaginable time. Desert roses form when barite crystalizes around sand grains in arid conditions — typically in dry lakebeds or evaporitic flats. The ‘petals’ are barite crystals grown in rosette clusters, each blade incorporating incorporated sand that gives them their sandy surface. They form over thousands of years, patient sculptures of the desert.
This specimen originates from Sahara Desert, Algeria, one of the world’s most significant localities for this type of material. Collectors and scientists have drawn from this region for generations, and for good reason: the combination of geological conditions here produces specimens of exceptional quality and clarity.
