Science and beauty are rarely in conflict. Here they converge. Kyanite’s defining property is its anisotropic hardness: 4.5 across the bladed crystal, 6.5–7 along it. A single crystal can scratch one way and be scratched from the other. The blue color comes from iron and titanium. Brazilian material — often sapphire-blue, sometimes teal — is among the most gem-like.
This specimen originates from Barra do Salinas, Minas Gerais, Brazil, one of the world’s most significant localities for this type of material. Collectors and scientists have drawn from this region for generations, and for good reason: the combination of geological conditions here produces specimens of exceptional quality and clarity.
