What looks like stone is, on closer inspection, frozen time. California’s state gemstone is found in one commercial location on Earth: the Benitoite Gem Mine in San Benito County. The deep sapphire-blue crystals sit on snow-white natrolite matrices in a combination so striking it feels staged. Under short-wave UV they fluoresce an electric blue that beggers description. Active collecting ended; existing specimens are a finite resource.
