What looks like stone is, on closer inspection, frozen time. Zircon is Earth’s oldest mineral — crystals from Western Australia have been dated at 4.4 billion years, older than any rock formation. Sri Lankan zircons are typically 540–600 million years old and are prized for their adamantine luster and dispersion that rivals diamond. They contain the earliest clock in Earth’s geological record.
This specimen originates from Ratnapura District, Sri Lanka, one of the world’s most significant localities for this type of material. Collectors and scientists have drawn from this region for generations, and for good reason: the combination of geological conditions here produces specimens of exceptional quality and clarity.
