Description
There are objects in this world that carry the weight of unimaginable time. The most prized andradite garnet has the highest dispersion of any natural gem — more ‘fire’ than diamond. The legendary Russian Ural deposits are mostly exhausted; Italian Val Malenco now produces the finest material. The ‘horsetail’ inclusion — chrysotile asbestos fibers radiating from a chromite crystal — is considered a positive identifier of Russian origin and paradoxically increases value.
This specimen originates from Val Malenco, Sondrio, Italy, one of the world’s most significant localities for this type of material. Collectors and scientists have drawn from this region for generations, and for good reason: the combination of geological conditions here produces specimens of exceptional quality and clarity.
Every specimen is unique. Photographs approximate the visual experience, but the real thing — its weight, its luster under a raking light, the way it catches the corner of your eye — can only be experienced directly.
