What looks like stone is, on closer inspection, frozen time. Cobalt-blue spinel is the rarest color variety — the vivid blue comes from cobalt substituting for magnesium. Vietnam’s Luc Yen produces specimens of electrifying blue, small but intense. The color is essentially the same mechanism as cobalt glass: cobalt’s electronic structure absorbs red and green wavelengths, reflecting only blue.
This specimen originates from Luc Yen, Vietnam, one of the world’s most significant localities for this type of material. Collectors and scientists have drawn from this region for generations, and for good reason: the combination of geological conditions here produces specimens of exceptional quality and clarity.
