Description
There are objects in this world that carry the weight of unimaginable time. The Green River Formation — Eocene lake beds in Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah — is one of Earth’s great fossil deposits. Fish are preserved in such fine-grained varve (annual) layers that individual scales are visible under a loupe, and the stomach contents of some specimens can be identified. These Eocene fish died approximately 50 million years ago, on a calm day in a subtropical lake.
This specimen originates from Kemmerer, Lincoln County, Wyoming, USA, one of the world’s most significant localities for this type of material. Collectors and scientists have drawn from this region for generations, and for good reason: the combination of geological conditions here produces specimens of exceptional quality and clarity.
