This one never unrolled. The calcified eyes, composed of individual calcite lenses each oriented to minimize spherical aberration, represent an optical system that evolution independently re-discovered in modern compound eyes. The Moroccan Sahara was once a shallow tropical sea.
This specimen originates from Hamar Laghdad, Erfoud, Morocco, one of the world’s most significant localities for this type of material. Collectors and scientists have drawn from this region for generations, and for good reason: the combination of geological conditions here produces specimens of exceptional quality and clarity.
